Smarte Carte’s Rapid Charge Cell Phone Charging Kiosk Takes Off at Airports

ST. PAUL, MN (MARCH 2006) – Smarte Carte, Inc.’s Airport Services Group is introducing an exciting new passenger service at airports across the country. The Charge Carte™ is a self-serve kiosk with multiple connectors to charge the most popular cell phones and PDAs.

The Charge Carte uses rapid charge technology that will safely charge a cell phone up to twice as fast as a standard outlet charger. For just $3.00 travelers can plug in their cell phone or PDA and get up to a 50% battery charge.

Smarte Carte has already installed more than 40 cell phone charging kiosks at airports in Akron-Canton, OH; Albany, NY; Boston, MA; Buffalo, NY; Houston (George Bush and Hobby – coming soon), TX; New York (LaGuardia), NY; Oklahoma City, OK; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, WA and Syracuse, NY and the company is marketing the new service to airports nationwide.

Seventy percent (70%) of air travelers carry cell phones, and airports do not have enough outlets in convenient places to meet the growing need to recharge phones during airport dwell time. Charge Carte stations are portable and require minimal floor space, making it easy to place them in convenient places like gate areas, business centers and food courts. A Charge Carte kiosk can turn one standard outlet into a charging station for 12 phones at one time.

Business travelers depend on their cell phones and PDAs to stay productive during their time at the airport. Leisure travelers often depend on their cell phones to connect with family or other forms of transportation from the airport. Both appreciate the convenience of the Charge Carte.

Market research conducted by Smarte Carte prior to introducing the service indicated that more than 60% of cell phone users would consider paying to charge their phone in an airport. Traveler response to the new service has exceeded expectations. Comment cards placed at the kiosks have provided customer feedback like – “Great idea!” – “This device is a life saver and reasonably priced.” – “Why isn’t this service in more airports?” “As cell phone and PDA models change, so will we,” said Bert Heaton, Senior Director of New Business Development for Smarte Carte’s Airport Services Group. “We can modify the station’s connectors to handle cell phones and PDAs from nearly any manufacturer. We are already charging the Blackberry® and are researching connectors for other PDAs, the iPod® and portable DVD players.”
